As The Queen's song said "fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go round" I say bikes do it as well. In 2003 there were 1.4 billion bikes around, an amount dwarfing the 400 million cars (source).
I came to think about this subject when I stumbled in some interesting infographics published by an Italian newspaper, I suppose it was ilSole24Ore and the infographic was by Francesco Franchi, whos' a great designer by the way. The infographic was depicting the global state of bike usage and I was amazed by its universal pervasiveness. The bike is the most common mean of transportation and its benefits are evident and countless. Many national governments and also individual municipalities are leading the way for a better cycling infrastructure to have more commuters ride their bike to work and move around the city. Also in the U.S., the country that created the car and was afterwards shaped by it, is making a huge turn to have more bikers and better bike routes. A comprehensive and nice infographic is available on http://blog.sustainablog.org
To the extent of its infrastructure Italy is not in good shape, since several cities are not that safe for bikers to get around. Yet, as this infographic puts it, the bike industry is still quite strong there, where loads of bikes and mostly bike components are manufactured and exported from.
While looking for more info and background for this post I found a pretty cool blog all about bikes and for bikers: http://fortheloveofbikes.blogspot.com/
As you might have guessed I am a biker too and I would love to see a better effort carried out by the city of Dublin to make bikers' lives more enjoyable and safe. How is biking in your city?
